With a passion for dance,
Deirdre was inspired to design her own clothes at a very early age. With some patterns and a borrowed sewing machine she took her mother's advice which was, "...if you don't like what you have, do it yourself." And so, at the age of ten Deirdre began making her own clothes.

When it came time to go to college, Deirdre enrolled in the best universities her native Australia had to offer, and completed a four-year course in Dress Design and Production in Melbourne. She studied all aspects of the garment industry, which included pattern cutting, tailoring, dressmaking, jewelry making, and dyeing. After graduation, Deirdre began her new career -- designing eveningwear. It did not take long for her to become a top designer in her trade.

Deirdre Baker

Deirdre's love of ballroom dancing & design continued and in 1976 she and her husband, Ray, traveled to London to further their dance training.

Having designed many gowns for both her and others, it was no surprise when she was offered an established costume designer business.

In 1977, Deirdre's qualifications and successful reputation allowed her to easily step in and take over an existing client base and the rest, as they say, is history.

In November of 1982, Deirdre changed the face of fashion permanently. In effect, she retired the mushroom-style net skirts when she introduced the present day "Ginger Rogers Style Gown" with its true costume design at the Closed British Championships. Deirdre made gowns for Champions from all over the world. It was the support and recommendations of these titled champions that convinced the Immigration Department to allow her admittance into the United States classifying her as a person of "extraordinary ability."

If you doubt you can accomplish something, then you can't accomplish it. You have to have confidence in your ability, and then be tough enough to follow through"
